The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir - Part 7

This book contains the interpretation of surahs thirty-nine through fifty-seven of the Glorious Qur'an, the primary source of Islam. A comprehensive commentary must take into account many aspects of diverse fields of knowledge. These include Arabic grammar and linguistics, jurisprudence, context, history, and others. It is perhaps unnecessary to state that this requires universal knowledge.

Ibn Kathir says in the introduction to his tafsir: "If someone asks for the best methods of tafsir, we reply that the most correct method of explaining the Quran is with the Quran itself. What is stated in general terms in one place in the Quran is usually explained in another. If one does not find this easy, one should look to the Sunnah, as its purpose is to explain the Quran and specify its meaning.

Allah says:
"We have revealed to you (O Muhammad) the Reminder (the Quran), that you may explain to the people what has been sent down to them and that they might give thought." (16 Surah Nahl: 44)
Therefore, see the Messenger of Allah:

“I have been given the Quran and its equivalent,” referring to the Sunnah.”

The first generation of Islam usually refrained from explaining that of which they had no knowledge. The following statement is narrated from Abu Bakr As-Siddiq:

“Which earth will carry me and which heaven will cover me if I say about the Book of Allah that of which I have no knowledge?”
